The Whangarei Acclimatisation Society met on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr. H. W. James, was in the chair. , ~ , , It was decided to support the Auckland Society in its request that fishing licences be raised to 30s, the Government to take one-third. A letter is to be written to the Auckland Society inquiring if that society is distributing birds on the Kaiwaka boundary of the district. A letter was received from Mr. Clarke suggesting that the society should take steps to have the Australian wood-duck acclimatised in the North. He described it as a good gamebird and excellent from a culinary point of view. It is very difficult to approach, favouring out-of-the-way streams and pools, and keeping * n small flocks. This duck is a prolific breeder, laying between 10 and 20 eggs, and choosing its nesting-place in hollow trees and stumps. It has a small, goose-like head, but otherwise has all the attributes of a duck.
