THE OLD STOCKADE
FURTHER DISCOVERIES (Special to THE SUN.) WAGANUI, Thursday. A further discovery has been made in connection with the old stockade. In addition to the leg chains, locks, bolts, etc. found last week, Superintendent Ching prosecuted his search and has now unearthed an iron bed utilised at the stockade. It is something out of the ordinary compared with modern beds and weighs 1301bs. and is strong enough for an elephant to sleep on. It has been handed over to the Curator of the Wanganui Museum and will be placed in the Wanganui bay of the new Museum. As there are some posts and other timber from the stockade available in Wanganui it is suggested that a certain portion be procured and made into a model representing the stockade so that present and future generations may be able to see the way in which the structure was built to resist attacks of the Maoris in the early days.
