MARRIAGE FORBIDDEN
BAN ON ITALIAN AIRMEN “ABSURD PROHIBITION” LONDON, Tuesday. A drastic choice between flying careers and marriage is given to Italian airmen in the Bill at present before the Italian Parliament, which excludes from the air force every officer marrying before 30. The grounds are that affections and famil3 r obligations have a marked influence on the equanimity of airmen. English experts regard the prohibition as absurd, and the Air Ministry says that such a measure would never be contemplated in England, where there is no preference betw'een married and single men. “Marriage does not affect the ability of airmen. For example, FlightLieutenant Gillman, who is married, was 36 hours in the air on an Indian non-stop flight. Lieut. Mackworth, Flight-Lieutenant Carrs new comrade, is married.
Captain Courtney’s wife says: “It is a stupid idea. Marriage stabilises a man and makes him more serious.” The majority of pilots on the civil airways in Europe are married. A. and N.Z.
