“OUR OWN MEN FIRST”
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED WELLINGTON POSITION (From Our Resident Correspondent .) WELLINGTON, Monday. “We are not going to absorb men who come from Auckland or from Christchurch. We want to get our own men work first.” This declaration was made by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, to-day answering a big meeting of unemployed, hich called attention to the delay in the commencement of relief works. “These delays,” continued Mr. Troup, “are as obnoxious to us as to you, and we want to go right ahead.” A questioner: Are you going to pay relief or ordinary wages? Mr. Troup: The council has decided to pay the same rates is last year Class A, 14s; Class B (lighter work), 12s. Preference will always be given to married men with families. Mr. Coates and Mr. Anderson (Minister of Labour) will be approached by an unemployment deputation to-morrow.
