TIMBER AND DUTIES
Sir, — I notice in the columns of THE SUN a letter signed by Mr. E. Stevenson, commenting upon the proposed duty on imported timber. With the sentiments of that letter I am very much in favour. In the first place there is no timber belonging to the North Island, with the exception of kauri, which is nearly extinct, that can compare with American cedar and pine. Most certainly not rimu or maitai, which are not in the same paddock so far as durability is concerned. Compared with American timber they are brittle, and lack durability. Then in the next place, as Mr. Stevenson points out, the cry to-day is for cheaper houses, which cannot be built if we bolster up the price of timber by placing a heavy duty on imported wood. I have very much pleasure in endorsing Mr. Stevenson’s letter. \ J. G RAC lE. Edendale.
