TROTTING SEASON ALMOST OVER

TROTTING

“ABAYDOS.”

SOUTH ISLAND FIXTURES CONCLUDE WITH ASHBURTON The curtain will be rung down on the South Island light harness season tomorrow when the Ashburton winter fixture is concluded. This will be followed a week later by the Auckland meeting, which after the two days’ sport has terminated will mark the closing of the 1926-27 season for the Dominion. A GOOD CARD The Ashburton gathering is a popular one with Southerners and additional attraction is given a fine programme by the meeting of the cream of the two-year-olds, in the Sapling Stakes, which is referred to in a separate article. Big fields and interesting racing promise to provide excellent sport for a large assemblage of trotting enthusiasts. The early jingle of the tote bells will announce to those present that the programme will commence with the TRIAL HANDICAP

Bingen Wilkes Lt. Eighteen of the twenty-nine competitors start off the end and among such a lot of novices there is apt to be a general mix up. No Fear, Brentfire and Audubon Lad, have won races on the West Coast, and may be the best of the front section. Jessie Huon shaped well recently and Slump has been expected to get a stake. Helen is due to make amends for past failures and Mac Dillon will be hard to stop from the back. The favourite selection should be Jessie Huon, Helen and Audubon Lad. Unhoppled trotters will try conclusions in the LONGBEACH HANDICAP Of 150 sovs.; unhoppled trotters; 3.50 class; 11 miles (harness).

Of those in the front line, the Amer-ican-bred Dolores will probably be entrusted with solid support, while Lord Tracey and Mickey Audubon should be well in the picture. Molly Molloy is said to be more than useful, while Quickfire won the last New Zealand Trotting Stakes. Connie Audubon and May Audubon will have many friends, and Great Amazon is on the improve. Oval and Kempton appear the best of the back markers. When it comes to the test, Micky Audubon, May Audubon, and Quickfire may be the elect of speculators. A good field will be seen in action for the chief event on the programme, the ASHBURTON COUNTY HANDICAP Of 380 sovs.; 4.38 class; 2 miles (harness).

Bold Bill figures on the end and will be a nuisance to the rest, and Hoon Hay will also be well in the limelight. Conara is in good form and Pluto beat a good field at Hawera during the Easter fixture. Homer and Loeanda Child are handily situated, and Peter Swift is bound to be cheeky. Avenger will be hitting out when it comes to the final push, and Author Jinks will have a host of admirers. If the bril-

liant Bessie Logan can stay on, she will be the pick of the bunch and Man o’ War must be treated with the utmost respect. The public will feel inclined to go for Hooper’s elect, Homer and Bessie Logan on the machine. The Sapling Stakes appears next after which a big contingent of even pacers will parade for the ACTON HANDICAP

There is not much between the limit brigade and the back markers in this heat, and of the former, Great Actress, Berma Pointer, Denver’s Doll and Yoicks look to hold brightest prospects. Panto is coming on the right way, and Kreisler may be reserved for the saddle race later. Omaha, St. Bridget and Huon Denver have recent form to recommend them. When the bells cease ringing Berma Pointer, Great Actress and Denver’s Doll may be accorded most support. Trotters who prefer a longer distance will have a royal battle in the

Tom Wilkes will not be forgotten in this go, and Oval and Sarsaparilla are in good positions. Commander Bingen is a solid customer and will fight to the finish, while Sea Queen and Little Johnnie both have credentials that will find them many friends. Nourmahal is not by any means out of the picture. The order of favouritism may be Commander Bingen, Oval and Little Johnnie. A lot of useful sprinters will be pitted against each other in the

The disappointing Desert Star will have another chance to make good, and Sungleam is on the upgrade. Hoon Hay and Loeanda Child will be a favoured bracket, while Meb’s friends will not lose heart. Avenger is well placed and Henry Logan can scamper over this journey. Fashion Queen has improved in great style, while Bold Bill, Trimmer and Author Jinks will have a good following. In a general sort up of a hard lot the public will probably go for Trimmer, Author Jinks, and Bold Bill. The meeting and the Southern season will be brought to a conclusion with the

A dozen runners figure off the end of the saddle dash, and if reserved for this heat Kreisler will take a lot of settling. Richore, who has not made good since landing the Sapling Stakes last year, may take it on with the weight on top and if he gets out those in the rearguard will require to hurry. Newcourt favours the saddle business and Moor Chimes is just the sort that might rush through and do things. Public fancy may lean toward Kreisler, Richore and Newcourt.
