WITHERED LAURELS

GENERAL DIES IN POVERTY CONQUEROR OF ERZEROUM By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright PARIS, Wednesday. The death has occurred of General Peter Kalitine, the Russian conqueror of Erzeroum. General Kalitine had lived for months in extreme poverty and died in an almshouse. After the victory at Erzeroum the late Tsar presented him with a gold sabre studded with diamonds, and the Allies also generously decorated him. After the war the general fled to Puris, where he scorned charity, and although he was 74 years of age, he tried to support his invalid daughter and his five other children by manual work. ✓ Erzeroum was captured by the Russians from the Turks on February 16, 1916. It was the principal Turkish stronghold in Asia Minor, and after its fall 12,753 men and 235 officers were taken prisoner.
