EFFICIENCY NEEDED IN EDUCATION
DEMANDS OF ECONOMY PROBLEMS FOR COUNCIL Press -Isit-eimiun. WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister 0 j Education, in welcoming the Council of Education to-day, said it was f, them to consider the matter of a*ri. cultural education. The physical instruction of primary scholars was a-,, other important question. Was tin present system of travelling instructors the best that could be devised or should there be concentration on training colleges?
Secondary school hostels provided another problem. The expenditure on education had increased from £1,750,000 in 1916-17 to £3,903,000 u 1926-27. This increase of 140 per cent no one would grudge. The Government was trying to conserve its funds without impairing efficiency, so as to have more money to spend upon urgent re. forms.
The building programme had In. increased to an enormous extent since the war. There had been a remarkable expansion of post-primary education. The cost of building had greatly increased, too, but the department was acquiring sites ahead of actual requirements, and in this wa, was effecting a great saving.
