CHEQUE FRAUDS
DISHONEST CANADIAN SON OF A JUDGE Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Seventeen charges of false pretences were preferred against Douglas Charles Hopewell, a young Canadian, who had been passing valueless cheques in various parts of the Dominion during the past twelve months. The amount involved in the charges totals £7O, but other offences were committed in Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch. Accused’s counsel stated that he was the son of a Canadian judge. He had distinguished war service, but was a drug-addict. He was remanded for the report of the probation officer.
