SCHOOL AT SEVENTY

GRAND-PARENT STUDENTS “It’s never too late to learn” is the motto of many elderly Londoners who blithely go to school at the L.C.C. continuation clases and evening institutes. Septuagenarians are not at all uncommon at these evening classes, and many of the “students” are grandfathers or grandmothers. At the present time pupils under the L.C.C. education department range from a baby of two at a nursery school to a man of 76 at an evening institute. The record for old age is believed to be held by a grandmother of 78 who attended classes two years ago. Compared with her, the woman -who took a course in commerce last year at the age of 60 was a mere stripling. “It is not uncommon for a grandmother to attend the same class as her daughter,” said an official, “but we always make a point of keeping women and girls separate. Not only is their education outlook different/ but the girl is quicker mentally than the elder women, and naturally it would be discouraging to women if they found themselves unable to keep up with the younger pupils.”
