PORTER FOUND DEAD
ST. PAUL STREET TRAGEDY INQUEST OPENED TO-DAY VVTALTER HILL, a porter employed at a city hotel, was found dead in the kitchen of a house at 34 St. Paul Street, at 11 o’clock last night with a gas tube beside him. The circumstances point to suicide. Hill, who rented a room at 34 St. Paul Street, since January 15, was a married man living apart from his wife. His mother resides at 74 Jervois Road, Ponsonby. His landlady heard him moving about his room at 10.30 last night, and half-an-hour later, attracted by a strong smell of gas. she found him sitting in a chair in the kitchen with his overcoat over his head and a gas tube beside him—dead. The gas was turned on. A note which expressed his intention to commit suicide has been found by the police. The inquest was opened by the coroner, Mr. W. R. McKean, this afternoon.
