North Shore Amalgamation
MAKING A MOVE The proposal to amalgamate the four North Shore boroughs, which up to the present time has only been of an unofficial nature, took definite shape last evening, when the Mayor of Northcote, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, gave notice to his council to move formally that the three other North Shore boroughs be written to, with a view to ascertaining their views on the subject of amalgamation. A suggestion was also received from the Birkenhead Council, to the effect that it would be in the interest of the two boroughs of Birkenhead and Northcote, to have the by-laws of the two districts placed on a uniform basis. This suggestion was unanimously endorsed by the Northcote Council. In support of the first proposal, it is pointed out by many prominent North Shore residents that in practice the four boroughs are really already united. The greatest needs of the North Shore residents are not administered by each of the four councils in their respective boroughs, but by boards representative of all the borough councils. The North Shore Water Board, the Waitemata Power Board, the Harbour Bridge Committee and the Marine Suburbs Association were all in existence for the purpose of advancing the interests of the North Shore, collectively. The nfeeds of the North Shore residents, whether they live in Devonport or Birkenhead, are identical. That the time is coming when the boroughs will unite is illustrated by the proposal to erect a combined North Shore refuse destructor.
