MAN FROM WEST INDIES

SCORE OF CONVICTIONS A MONTH FOR VAGRANCY “I know you went down to the relief works and the sight of It gave you such a shock that you came back to Auckland.” WHEN John Holmes, a West Indian, charged in the Police Court yesterday morning with being idle and disorderly, cross-examined DetectiveSergeant O’Brien about the amount of work he (Holmes) had done in the past, he did not bargain for such a reply. Detective White told the court that Holmes had been knocking about Queen Street for quite a long time. “He told me he had no intention of looking for a job," said the detective; "I saw him again yesterday under the influence of liquor, and arrested hjm.” “He is well-known,” the detectivesergeant said. "He's one of those sort that hangs about town.” Holmes protested that he had a job to go to over at Devonport, but it wasn’t ready yet. “He has 20 previous convictions,” Chief-Detective Cummings told the magistrate. “His list shows the type of man he is.” It was his long list that put all thoughts of leniency out of Mr. W. R. McKean's mind. The man from the West Indies will not “hang about town” for the next month.
