Vancouver or Gaol?
FATE IN THE BALANCE STEWARD GIVEN A CHANCE WHETHER Ernest Wright would sail in the Maunganui for Vancouver hung in the balance in the Police Court yesterday until just an hour before the ship cast off. Wright, who is 31, was arrested in High Street yesterday for being drunk, and charged in addition with a breach of the terms of his probation. The probation officer, Mr. Campbell, told the court that accused, was placed on probation in January and ordered to make £3O restitution, none of which had been paid. The man had been transferred to Wellington and maintained that he had been given permission by the probation officer there to join the Maunganui. Wright was quite sure that he would earn sufficient as a steward during the voyage across the Pacific to pay back all he owed. The money he had spent in getting drunk and the £2 odd found on him when arrested was the proceeds from tips, he explained to the magistrate, in reply to a question. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., decided to give him a chance to earn the £3O, and so convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence if called on within three months. On the charge of drunkenness he was fined 10s.
