WARD VOTING SYSTEM

PROSPECTS OF BETTER RESULTS A list of 61 names on a ballot-paper was Auckland’s experience last election, but according to an indication given by Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, chairman of the Auckland Electric-Power Board, when addressing Tamaki ratepayers on the Greater Auckland scheme, the trouble may not recur. Mr. S. G. Chambers spoke of the trouble of selecting a council from the 61 nominees. Wouldn’t a ward system be more satisfactory? Voters had not a personal knowledge of the men they voted for. Mr. Holdsworth advocated a system of voting embracing the principles of the London County Council voting and the Glasgow system. This brought in a ward system which stimulated local interest and; persuaded better men to come forward.
