TROTTING

NOTES AND COMMENTS
FROM NEAR AND FAR B. "Wood's team at Taupiri is reported to be going along the right way and they- should be forward enough to do their painstaking mentor further service. The Cambridge Cup winner, Bock Hinton, will be the pick of the Taupiri orchard, and he will be a tough nut to crack in whatever his owner decides to send him for. Bill Still Second Bold Bill made another bold effort to have his name inscribed on the list of winners at Addington on Friday, but although he behaved like a good boy, he was topped off by Ariki. The son of Great Audubon—Miss Mischief has been very consistent this season in securing place money, but perhaps he will go one better at Ashburton on Saturday and salute his Honour. Soon in the Money The converted trotter, Cannonball, was not long in making his presence felt among the unhoppled division, and West Coast admirers of the son of Wildwood Junr.—Madam Shaw would have a good win as a result of the ex-pacer’s achievement on Saturday. A Real Mare Bessie Logan is a real mare, speedy, reliable and game. Her dual win at Addington during the week-end stamped the daughter of Logan Pointer—Bess Elect as a crack-a-jac.k over 10 furlongs and Butterfield’s charge is now given a, high place among the best of the sprinters. A Promising Filly Nan Brent, the filly by Brent Locanda —Maura, who won the Maturity Handicap at Christchurch on Saturday, has been showing good form recently in her track work. She was well backed and well beaten, however, at Oamaru in the Advance Handicap, but her connections would more than even up as a result of Nan’s Maturity victory. Not Before His Time Huon Denver, who annexed the twomile saddle event at Addington on the King’s Birthday, is a five-year-old grey gelding by Denver Huon from a Prince Imperial mare and registered his initial victory at the game. Last year the grey started 11 times for one second, and up till Friday last had a somewhat similar record for this season. Our Pirate Attracts Attention The visit of Our Pirate is creating a good deal of talk, says a Christchurch writer. It is known that he is a pretty useful pacer, and though he has never performed on a clay track there is no suggestion that he won’t be at home on the dirt circuit at Addington. It is apparent that the son of Our Thorpe did not start at Addington. but will no doubt sport silk at Ashburton in the mile saddle heat on Saturday. Only a Fiver At “Tattersalls,” Christchurch, recently two pacers were sold for £5. One of them, Ben Ohau, was afterwards purchased by J. Bryce. The son of O.Y.M. has been a useful performer over a mile in saddle, and Bryce may get another race out of the old chap yet. Doing Well The Greymouth trainer, J. Jarden, who has been laid up in- hospital this past two weeks, is making a satisfactory recovery. Jim is expected to be well enough to leave the institution this week. Cardinal Logan’s Relative The two-year-old brother to Cardinal Logan in R. W. Franks’s stable, who is engaged in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, has been named Monopole. The youngster is also included in the field for the next Great Northern Derby. Red Peter Working Well The tricky ex-West Coast trotter Red Peter is working well for L. H. Cavalier at Templeton. This horse usually does, but wait till he goes to the races, and then Red Peter is a horse of another colour. He is no good for a working man. Machine Gun’s Improvement Machine Gun has improved considerably since settling in Christchurch. It is doubtful if he will race well on the Addington track, but on large or right-handed courses the Australian pacer will win races. Rebuilding Grandstand The rebuilding of the grandstand on the Greymouth trotting track is to be commenced shortly. Tenders have been called, and it is hoped to have the new stand ready for the spring meeting which takes place in October. An Attractive Filly There is a two-year-old filly at Oneiiunga, a well-grown, amiable youngster, claiming Blue Mountain King as her sire, which is attracting quite i lot of attention, and which experts consider will be ready for the races in October. The young lady, who is out of Princess Ena, figures among the early entrants for the Auckland Derby, and if the Onehunga candidate continues on the right way, she should make a bold bid to uphold the trotting dignity of the province. Premierships D. Withers is at the head of the riders’ and drivers’ list for the season with 26 wins. He is closely followed by M. B. Edwards and W. J. Tomkinson, with 251 and 22 wins respectively. M. B. Edwards heads the winning trainers’ list with 24H* wins, W. J. Tomkinson being his nearest attendant with 21, while J. Bryce is third with 19.
