Fishing Launch Fails to Return
FIVE MEN ABOARD THREE Europeans and two Maoris in a fishing- launch are ■1 missing- from Opotiki and there is a heavy sea running-. ('From Our Own Correspondent.J
OPOTIKI, To-day. r £'HE gravest doubts arc entertained as to the safety of five men who on Friday left Kutarere on a fishing expedition intending to return on Sunday. The party left Ohiwa harbour in Mr. Alan Abbot’s launch, and up to the present time the vessel has not returned. A heavy sea is running in the Bay of Plenty, and the position is such as to cause the relatives of the absent men grave anxiety.
The members o£ the missing party ; are Alan Abbot, Kutarere; R. King, , Kutarere; Harold Jones, and two Maoris whose names are not known. It was the intention of the party to i fish about Raurimu Rocks and Whale Island. It is possible the men are sheltering owing to the rough sea, but it has . been impossible to send relief. Captain Gash of the oil-vessel Otimai, is at present in Ohiwa, and intends putting to sea at the earliest possible moment, and will search the bay for the missing launch.
