SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG INTERESTS ALL DOMINIONS

UNANIMITY URGED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Friday. Vice-Admiral P. W. Dumas, in a letter to “The Times,” concerning the South African flag, says the design of the flag not only greatly interests South Africa, but every Dominion and colony in the Empire. Furthermore, the fact that the flag will be flown at sea necessitates that all the world should be able to clearly distinguish it at a distance of two miles. Therefore he suggests that consideration of the settlement of the problem should be deferred until the next meeting of the Dominions at the imperial Conference, when everybody should have a say, “and, I hope, agree.” Continuing, Admiral Dumas says: “I further make the suggestion, because from the seamen’s point of view the flags of Australia, Canada and many colonies would not fulfil these requirements. Nobody outside these countries could clearly recognise the almost microscopical designs. These great and splendid Dominions and colonies in course of time will possess navies and merchantmen, and it would be the greatest pity to settle the design of flags which represent them individually in anywise unworthily.” —A. and N.Z.
