A Battle of Flowers in Auckland
CARNIVAL PROPOSED FESTIVAL ON EUROPEAN LINES WILL Auckland havs a carnival week with a “battls of flower*” and an historic pageant play and athletic festival on the old European carnival lines?? The question of inaugurating a National Festival to be held in November, 1927, will be considered at a meeting convened for the purpose by the mayor, Mr. eGorge Baildon, to be held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall on the afternoon of June 7, at 3 p.m. The organiser, Mr. Albert Goldie, who has promoted similar festivals in Australia, explains that the idea is to establish a carnival on similar lines and on the same scale of magnificence as those held in many towns in Europe and America. An Olympic sports meeting, a “battle of flowers,” a open air pageant play depicting episodes In New Zealand's history, and a great fair are features proposed. The event, it is claimed, will bring visitors from far and near and films will carry the name of the city all over the world. The proceeds will be distributed among specially selected charities. *
