JASPER'S WEEK
A GREAT PROGRAMME Beginning with the anniversary service to-morrow night, when the Archbishop will preach at the Hippodrome Theatre, the City Mission will keep high revels next week. The Rev. Jasper Calder (Jasper for short) will attack the pockets of the citizens in no uncertain fashion. His famous company of pierrots, known as “Jasper’s Limited,” will appear in a vaudeville concert at the Town Hall on Tuesday night, when a unique programme will be presented. Jasper hates the oldfashioned song after song programme, so he has cut the Gordian knot by banning the “straight” song and depends upon humour, choruses, instrumental items, sketches and opera for main attractions. His two sons, Denver and Bud, will appear in an original sketch, Mr. Bob Adams will play his big Marimba, Mr. Charles Madden will ventriloquise, and Mr. Walter Smith’s band will lead the Hawaiian music. The musical gems are the choruses “Wanganui Ripples,” “Coral Sands,” “The Lost Chord,” “Beneath the Maori Moon” (composed by Walter Smith), and a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Hardwick. The sketches include “Deadly Poison” (an Ellerslie tragedy), “A Movie MixUp,” said to be the funniest thing seen here for years, and the 25-minutes' play, “Scrooge’s Christmas Day,” with. Jasper in the title role, a charactei which won him the gold medal at tlm recent competitions. An orchestra ol 14 will be led by Miss Florence "Walker, accompanied by Mr. Osborn. For three days following the concert the Big Winter Fair will be staged at the Town Hall. Over 150 workers have been busy for months past getting ready for this, and it should be a huge success. ' Art unions, guessing competitions and an “Ugly Man” contest are also associated with the show.
