A FAMOUS FRIGATE

“OLD IRONSIDES” CONTEST ONLY A MONTH MORE MODELS of the frigate “Old Ironsides” are required by June 30—not a month away. Prize-money amounting to £ls will be won by the best two models in this contest arranged by THE SUN in conjunction with Paramount Pictures.

It must be remembered that “Old Ironsides” was a sailing ship >of the period of 1800. She carried a full plan of sails and 54 mounted guns on two decks. Any hoy can make up a sailing hull from small pieces of timber or one solid piece and from that proceed to build the model. The contest is open to boys up to 16 years of age and entries must be in the hands of the “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, care of THE SUN, by June 30. ADMIRAL AS JUDGE This competition, which has been running in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, simultaneous with Auckland, has aroused unprecedented interest everywhere. In Melbourne Admiral Cresswell kindly consented to act as judge in the competition and in Sydney, Captains Bayldon, Brownlow and Lucas, all members of the Ancient League of Mariners. The story of “Old Ironsides” embraces life during the early part of the nineteenth century in its rela-

tionship to the fortunes of the sea. Thus we see revealed a small republic building ships to destroy a seapower that had terrorised Europe for hundreds of years. Many a ship’s crew knew the horror of disgrace and death at the hands of the barbaric pirates, who menaced the freedom of the Mediterranean sea about 1800. The introduction of this epic of the seas shows a meeting of the American Congress, when they decided to build the famous frigate “Constitution” nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” sometimes derisively called “a barque of fir,” yet destined to make one of the most thrilling pages in naval history. The competition is open to boys up to 16 years of age. Model builders are invited to apply to “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, THE SUN, for further information about the ship. Please fill in this coupon and send it to the Contest Editor if you intend to submit a model:
