THE BROWN SHIELD
SOCCER AT HAMILTON A GREAT GAME (From Our Otcn Correspondent.) HAMILTON. To-day. The contest for the Brown Shield drew a large attendance to Se«ldon Park yesterday. The game was a splendid one, victory going to South Auckland by three goals to two. In the early stages the Northern men showed superior combination, but the Southern backs were the deciding factor. Play was fast and open throughout and the spectators enjoyed a fine exhibition. The Southern goalkeeper, D. Hunter, showed up well in stopping dangerous rushes and J. Rodgers, as centre half, put in good work for the north. Within five minutes of the opening of play B. Taylor scored for the North and a little later Buchanan took control of the ball for the home side and transferred to Tait, who centred cleanly. Chalmers received the bah and shot a good goal, thus equalising the scores. South Auckland was on the defensive until a movement started by Buchanan culminated in Black scoring, and at half time the scores were: South Auckland, 2; North Auckland. 1. With the resumption of play the North made the pace, but could no: score. The South gradually w*orked play down the field, until Chalmers took the ball from Moon and found the net. With the score standing 3-1 in favour* of the South, play was resumed with much dash and finally the South was penalised and Rodgers scored. Th; North again pushed the attack, but the assault weakened and no further score was added, the game ending 3-2 in favour of the South.
