Australian Cruiser Launched.—A London message states that the Australian cruiser Canberra has been launched. U.S.A. Hastings Man Remanded. —At the request of Chief-Detective Cummings, Frank John O’Neil aged 34, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with failing to account for £9 6s 9d belonging to Samuel Armstrong, of Hastings, was remanded to June 9. Work at Arapuni.—lt is reported that the Arapuni hydro-electric works are proceeding satisfactorily and the flood water is receding. At present some difficulty is experienced in completing the power house foundations, but it is expected the flood water will be clear in the course of another ten days. Forged Cheques.—ln tho New Plymouth Police Court Hector Victor Perwarden, 27, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery of cheques passed at New Plymouth and Eltham to a total value of £27 and was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence. Other charges are pending in other centres against the accused. Accountant in Trouble.—An accountant named Sydney Rowland Grover, aged 33, who had been in New Zealand only two and a-half years, at Wellington to-day pleaded guilty to issuing valueless cheques and obtaining £l4 in money and goods.
