SIR JAMES ALLEN
SEAT IN UPPER HOUSE APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED Press Association. "WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Sir James Allen, formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, has been appointed to the Legislative Council. Sir James Allen has had a distinguished political career. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 18S7, for Dunedin East, where he vanquished the then Premier, Sir Robert Stout, by a narrow majority. He held the seat until IS9O, and from 1891 until 1920 he represented Bruce. Sir James was appointed Minister of Defence in the Massey Government in 1912 and he held office throughout the Great War. He was also Minister of Finance, holding both portfolios until 1920, when he-resigned from the Ministry to become High Commissioner in London. Pie is 72 years of age.
