‘NERVE AND ENDURANCE'

GREAT FEAT APPLAUDED British Wireless. — Copyright. RUGBY, Tuesday. A luncheon. was given by the Air Council to-day in honour of Captain Lindbergh. The Secretary of State for Air, Sir Samuel Hoare, congratulated the airman on his achievement and on the fact that he had received the Royal Air Force Cross from the King. As to the use of Captain Lindbergh’s flight Sir Samuel said from a technical point of view it was of great value. These long-distance flights stimulated progress and tested the reliability of aerial navigation. But the world at large rightly reached its verdict upon broader grounds. The peoples of many countries to-day applauded Captain Lindbergh’s achievement not so much because some material gain would be obtained as a result of it, but because it was a flue example of nerve and endurance, skill and courage, enterprise and adventure. In replying, Captain Lindbergh said .the fact that he reached the coast of Europe was in no way due to mere luck of navigation. The fact that he arrived within three miles of his course was entirely a coincidence. The airman visited the House of Commons this afternoon. He will not visit any other part of Europe. It is believed this is the outcome of the officially expressed desire of the United States Government for his return immediately. The motive for this is believed to be that Captain Lindbergh should be able to avoid the possible embarrassment of accepting some invitations and declining others. —A. and N.Z.
