BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL

Estimates for the current year were presented and passed by the Birkenhead Borough Council last night. It was decided to levy the same rates as in the previous year. The consolidated rate of 6sd includes loan interest, hospital and general. A water consumer’s rate of one penny is to be levied, and a sanitation charge made of £1 14s for the year. The district telegraph engineer wrote in answer to the request for automatic telephones in Birkenhead and North - cote, stating that before they can be installed there would have to be 200 subscribers.

In reply to the council’s inquiry, the auditor-general wrote saying that he was of the opinion that the council could, out of the district borough’s funds, contribute toward preliminary survey, etc., in connection with the proposed Waitemata Harbour bridge. The Poppy Day collection in Birkenhead amounted to £l3 10s. The mayor (Air. E. G. Skeates) pointed out that £llO 2s 8d had been collected at the Ferry Buildings, and much of this had been given by the people of Birkenhead. The mayor’s honararium was fixed at £75 for the year. Six permits for new buildings were granted.
