STILL MORE SCHOOLS
NEEDS OF AUCKLAND ROOMS OVERCROWDED ' THERE has been an increase of -** 124 schools in the Auckland Education Beard’s district in the last 10 years, the total number at the end oF 1926 being 754. The annual report, adopted at today's meeting, stated that at the end of last year there were 68,252 pupils (35,511 boys and 32,741 girls), being an increase of 1,248 over the number enrolled at the end of 1925. The yearly average attendance was 59,637, a decrease of 218.
During the year 17 new schools were built, 3 5 were enlarged, seven temporary buildings were erected, and three schools were remodelled.
The income for the year ended December 31 was £ 857,281 18s 4d, and the expenditure £856.447 10s lOd. Grunts made by the Department during the year ' enabled a fairly vigorous policy with reference to the provision of school accommodation in the Auckland education district to be adopted. Accommodation requirements, however, had not yet been even approximately overtaken. In several schools the accommodation was congested and inadequate, and a large number of halls and other private buildings were still used to provide school accommodation.
