WEATHER FAVOURS FLAX MILLERS
INCREASED GRADING RETURNS NEW COMPANIES CUTTING Favourable weather conditions made possible a big increase in the returns of flax graded at the Port of Auckland for the month of May, as compared with the corresponding period of last year. As yet only two or three mills in the district are reported to have closed down for the season, and the fibre should continue to come forward for grading till the wet weather commences in earnest.
One of the recently-formed development companies is now cutting, and sending in small quantities of fibre for export. Another company, Flaxlands, Ltd., recently applied for a registered brand, and is reported to be ready to start operations, though as yet no fibre under that brand has passed through the grading store. Returns of the flax graded at the Port of Auckland for May are: Hemp: Good fair, 7 bales; high, 428 bales; fair, 1,229 bales; common. 478 bales; rejected, 55 bales. Total, 2,197 bales. Tow: No. 1. 88 bales; No. 2, 164 bales; No. 3, 281 bales; condemned, 9 i bales. Total, 542 bales. Stripper Tow: Three of No. 3 grade: 35 condemned. Stripper Slips: Nine of No. 2 grade. The total figures for May, 1926, were: Hemp, 1,614 bales; tow, 504 bales; stripper tow, 17 bales; stripper slips, 10 bales.
