Canutt, as a rider, is no overnight development. He rode his first contest at the age of 16 and won the country championship at Colfax Washington. At the age of 20 he rode a tie for the world's championship. At 21 he won the world's championship in 1917. In 1928 he was In the army, and the next year re-won the riding belt. In 1920 lie won the bull-dojf-ging championship and the all-round cowboy belt. He repeated the dupleg achievement in 1923. That year fee won the Roosevelt trophy, which Is given for high points in contests; at Cheyenne and Pendleton.
