TOWN HALL
ZIMBALIST’S FAREWELL Box plans are now open at Lewis R. Eady and Son, for the farewell recital of the renowned violinlist, Zimbalist, which will be given in the Town Hall next Friday evening. In view of the enthusiasm aroused by Zimbalist’s playing at his recent concerts here it would seem safe to predict that there will be very few- vacant chairs in the Town Hall on Friday night, when the master will take his leave of Dominion music-lovers. A specially attractive programme has been selected, including the great Glazounov Concerto in A Minor. Glazounov, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, is a man of extraordinary musical talent, and has composed several fine orchestral works, unfortunately still unknown outside Russia. “Many people ask for information about you,” wrote Tschaikowsky to him in 1889 from Berlin. “They know that you are still very young, but are amazed when I tell them that you wrote your E Flat Symphony at fifteen. I am a great admirer of your gifts, and I value the earnestness of your aims and your artistic sense of honour.” Glazounov’s violin concerto was published in 1903 and dedicated to Professor Leopold Auer. It has been played in America and most of the European capitals by Mr. Zimbalist, and is now regarded as one of the greatest works written for the violin. Minor works to be performed at Friday’s concert will include compositions by Bach, Couperin. Rameau, Gossec and Mr. Zimbalist himself.
