TOBACCO CULTURE
EXPERT GUARANTEE (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, in discussing the prospects of tobacco-growing in New Zealand, said that in order to encourage the cultivation of tobacco the Government recently granted a guarantee to growers on all tobacco leaf approved for export by the Department of Agriculture. The guarantee was offered in resper.t to tobacco-leaf exported during 1927, 1928 and 1929. The grower was guaranteed an average gross market price of 2s 3d a lb. on the open market in London on all leaf of Class 1 and Is 4d a lb. on leaf of Class 2—the gross liability of the Government not to exceed £3,500 in any one year. “A good start has already been made in the Nelson district,” he said, “where planting and curing operations are being carried out under the supervision of an Instructor in Tobacco Culture appointed by the Department.”
