OPOTIKI EXPERIENCES
FIERCE GALE RAGES LINES DOWN, ROADS BLOCKED (From. Our Otvn Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, Saturday. A terrific gale and heavy rain was experienced in Opotiki district last night. A tree in the borough which was blown down carried away the electric and telephone wires. Repairs were effected early this morning. Trees in other parts of the district were blown down and the main telegraph line to Cape Runaway was broken. It is hoped to restore the service to-day. Minor slips occurred on the OpotikiGisborne Road and it is expected that this will delay the service cars. The road between Whakatane and Opotiki is blocked near Taneatua, but it is expected the waters will subside this morning and enable traffic to resume. Heavy damage was done to haystacks. Iron coverings were torn off by heavy wind and scattered in all directions. The exposed stacks were saturated by the torrential rain and the rivers rose rapidly, but there was no serious flooding. A heavy sea is running in the Bay of Plenty this morning. An earthquake passed through the district about 7 o’clock this morning, hut the shock was slight.
ROAD BLOCKED
The road through the Mamaku Bush is closed through three slips having come down. It will be several days before the road is open for motor traffic.
