NEW ZEALAND VARSITY AVENGES DEFEAT

WINS SECOND RUGBY TEST EXCITING MATCH IN SYDNEY By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, Sunday. QN defeating the Sydney University football team in the second test match on Saturday by 15 to 11, the New Zealand University team avenged its defeat in the first test. The New Zealand players were: Butler, Freeman, Ross, Lindsay, Love, Bradanovitch, Holden, Hindenach, Keegan, Dunne, Alley, Burns, Smith, O’Regan, and Morete. The Sydney players were: Ross, Mann, Burge, Gibson, Johnson, Sheehan, Lamport, Waddington, O’Dea, Windeyer, Finlay, Flynn, Hingst, Doyle, and Rosenblum. There was a strong breeze and bright sun. New Zealand again lost the toss, and kicked off against the -wind and the sun. Pla:/ was very even, and both sides attacked in turn. Some likely movements were spoiled at the critical moment. Sheehan set his backs moving well, but the New Zealand defence was sound. Butler and Ross, the respective fullbacks, got in several good line kicks.

The visiting forwards were holding their own in the loose better than in the first test, and they combined well in several good dribbling rushes. The New Zealanders were getting the ball from the scrum better, but their handling was poor. After some hard work Lindsay scrambled over at the corner, three minutes before half-time, but Butler’s kick failed, and the first half ended with the scores: New Zealand 3 points, Sydney 0. __ A minute after the resumption Butler made a mark, and made a good attempt at goal, but his kick went just outside the post. The New Zealanders were keeping the ball among their forwards, who were working well and tackling hard. Shortly afterwards Dove injured his ankle, and retired. He was replaced by Pacey. A penalty against Sydney gave O’Regan a kick at goal, but he failed to score. New Zealand came down strongly, hut a likely try was spoiled by Bradanovitch, who did not pass out. From the line-out a scramble on the line ensued, and Smith forced his way over and scored. Butler's kick went just wide. A minute later Lindsay secured the ball, and made a good run. Pie evaded Sheehan and Burge, and score ! in the corner. Butler again failed to convert the try. Sydney then took a turn at attacking. The ball came from the loose to Lamport, and then passed through several hands to Burge, who scored, and Ross converted the try. Play then brightened up. Holden got the ball from a scrum and dashed to the Sydney line, where he lost possession, but Alley dashed over and scored. Lindsay’s kick failed. Sydney came again, but the New Zealand forwards were playing a great game. Morete got in some useful work. A further exciting piece of play was started by the Sydney fullback, which resulted in Sheehan scoring a try. Ross’s kick went wide. Sydney again attacked strongly, and hammered at the New Zealand line. Weak tackling allowed Mann to dash over and score. Ross again failed with his kick. The New Zealanders now pressed hard, but a penalty kick brought relief to Sydney. Hard and exciting play followed, and Lindsay, just on time, dashed up and passed to Keegan, who scored a try, which Butler failed to convert. Time was then called-—A. and N.Z.
