FLOOD AT ARAPUNI

WORK HELD UP Over two inches of rain fell at Arapuni on Friday, and the level of the river at the dam site has risen two feet since 7.30 a.m. The water was too much for the nine cusecs pump discharging the soakage through the gabion dam. and although an extra pump was installed, the great pressure caused Ihe seepage to gain on both pumps, so both had to be withdrawn. The water reached the apron of the middle segment of the dam, which is now completed to Its full width of 171 feet. The wing wall on the western side is not in pln.ee alongside the segment, so that those excavations will be flooded, and covered with debris. The flow cf the river has risen to 11,000 cusecs and will probably continue to rise during the next 24 hours. The flood held up the work on concreting on Saturday, as the concrete gang has been employed in safeguarding the situation
