More Soccer Men on the Mat
CHRISTIE SUSPENDED WOOLLEY ALSO CONCERNED There are still some naughty Soccer men left, for at a meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Football Association held last evening J. Christie, a member of the Thistle senior team, was suspended for one playing day. He was charged with allegedly kicking an opponent during a game at Blandford Park last Saturday. The referee of the match, Mr. E. A. Parkinson, said that he had ordered Christie off the field, as he was of the opinion that a kick had been delivered and it appeared intentional. Christie explained to the committee that his leg had become entangled in those of a North Shore player named Woolley and it was impossible to actually kick him. “The referee said I had to go off and as soon as I did so Woolley came up to me and shook hands, saying it was his fault, and he was sorry,” protested Christie. “Furthermore, this chap Woolley was cautioned by the referee later in the game,” he continued. The ball was out' of play at the time and it was the opinion of many of those who witnessed the match that the whole affair was unnecessary and while no doubt Woolley was in the wrong Christie had used a great deal of violence to get free. In suspending Christie it was the feeling of the committee that Woolley was also in the wrong and it was resolved to order him to come before the committee next week. ALSO ON THE MAT There was still another Soccer enthusiast on the mat last night and that was referee Low. Pie had failed to notify the committee that he would be unable to officiate in a senior match until a few minutes before the game took place. Low stated that he took very ill on Saturday morning. However, rather than let the committee think that he was shirking, he struggled along to Blandford Park with the full intention of taking the match. When he arrived there he became worse than ever and sat in the dressing room, too sick to inform the committee of his indisposition. He said that if he had taken the field in his condition at the time the ambulance men would have had to carry him off.
Members of the Y.M.C.A. Club were regraded as follows: S. Gale, from senior to third grade; A. Birkenhead and S. Smith, second to third grade; and E. Farmer, from third grade open to intermediate grade. It was resolved to play the first round of the Chatham Cup competition on June 3 and 4, two games to be played on each day.
