DR. FRANK CRANE'S DAILY EDITORIAL
WHY IS A PIG’S TAIL? (Copyright, 1927.) t M Y vote for the nomination to the office of Unparalleled Number One on the lisc of Useless Things goes to the tail of a pig. It is the supreme creation of inutility. The long, mobile snout is an A No. 1 instrument, but the tail is a total loss. It is not. long enough to flick an offending fly from an offending ear, nor feathered enough to sweep off the part it does reach. It is just a spinal raveling. It sticks out there spoiling the otherwise beautiful lines of an excellent streamlike shape. It isn’t a barometer of sentiment, as is the tail of a dog. It isn’t a fly swatter, as is the tail of a mule. It isn’t a rudder, as is the tail of a fish. It isn’t a means of locomotion, as is the tail of a snake. It isn’t an anchorage, as is the tail of a shirt. It is just a tail. Some zoologists say the reason a pig roots in the ground is to And truffles —all wrong. He is trying to hide his head ostrich-wise, because ha is ashamed of his tail.
