FARMERS’ UNION
PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE OPENS AT WHANGAREI (From Our Own Correspondent .) WHANGAREI, To-day. The twenty-seventh annual provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union opened in Whangarei last night. The president. Mr. C. O. Munro, occupied the chair, and 65 delegates were present.
Mr. L. J. Brake, Mayor of Whangarei, extended a welcome to the delegates, and Mr. W. Jones, M.P., joined in the greetings. The president, Mr. C. C. Munro, said that, while discussing the shifting of the conference, it was decided to hold it in Auckland, Hamilton, and 'Whangarei alternately. Whangarei drew the first position. This was a better idea than holding it in one centre always. In reviewing the work of the Farmers’ Union in the Auckland Province for the past year, and the position of the farming industry in New Zealand generally, the president said ho had to record a period of keen activity on the part of the union, and a correspondingly timid, hesitating, and altogether insufficient response on the part of the Government to the appeals of the farmers for assistance to enable them to bring their industry back to the position of national importance which it should command.
