ALLEGED INSULTS RESENTED BY GUARD
PASSENGER BEFORE COURT (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. Before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday, D. McLennan pleaded not guilty to using insulting language to the guard on the Maungaturoto-Auckland train. J. W. Hurst, guard, said he had occasion to speak to accused for smoking in a non-smoking carriage. As he was closing the door leading into the lavatory he heard accused call him a crawler, and also say something about red tape. When he got to Helensville he complained to the stationmaster and laid the information. McLennan, sworn, said he did not use the expressions complained of, and did not in fact, address any remarks of any kind, either to or at the guard. The Bench convicted and fined McLennan £l, with costs £2 12s.
