THE STRAND
“THE BIRTH OF A FLOWER” Pillsbury’s famous Yosemitc slowmotion flower films, coming to the Strand Theatre on Friday, with a lecture by Clarke Irvine, of Honolulu, who bought the pictures, make a wonderful evening’s entertainment. In it are included amusing snapshots of big burly bears eating from the hand of man, young fawn and deer, birds and little beasties; and for the kiddies, snowshoe races, skating and snow battles are a regular comedy. The picture has been endorsed by such territorial authorities as 'Will C. Crawford, superintendent of public instruction, who said: “I have seen these pictures twice and both times was very much impressed. It is indeed marvellous to watch the buds swell, burst and finally to see the petals slowly unfold in only a few seconds on the screen. “These films are very much worth the time of anyone. I believe this is especially true of young people, for the pictures are of tremendous educational value and the outdoor scenes are really wonderful. “I heartily recommend these pictures to schools, churches and to the general public as educational, clean and inspiring.” This is one of the few movies which call forth applause without emotional enthusiasm. They simply burst into loud clapping at the spectacular blossoming of a simple flower or the gorgeous scenic shots of the Yosemite Valley and the high Sierra Mountains. As one paper said in reviewing the offering, “The applause showed what kind of pictures people really want. Do not let anything prevent you from seeing it.”
