A Clan War In Scotland
Camerons v. Campbells
Feelings High Through Attempted Land Grab
Historic feuds of Highland clans were revived at the meeting of the Inverness County Council to discuss a proposal to annex a portion of the Inverness shire to Argyllshire for electricity and aluminium development schemes in the Highland.
The proposals will mean the establishment of an important new village, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, on the scene of the decisive battle of Inver - lochy in 1645, in which the Duke of Montrose, with the Camerons and the Macdonalds, beat the clan of Campbell under the Duke of Argyll. The county of Argyll has made a formyl application to the Secretary for Scotland with a view to the inclusion of the area. Colonel Donald Cameron, of Lochiel, in a speech to the Inverness Council, said the Argyll invaders were taught a salutary lesson at Inverlochy* If the clan of Campbell persisted in its application it would receive another salutary lesson, though perhaps not bloodily. Territorial Aggression He added that the proposal was the most outrageous example of territorial aggression on the part of one county against another witnessed for three centuries. The Mackintosh of Mackintosh, Lord-Lieutenant of Inverness shire, said that Lochiel had spoken as a Cameron to a Campbell. He had never heard a better speech. Lochiel. replying, said the Mackintoshes and Camerons were a match for the Campbells any day. The “Daily News” remarks that the clan feeling in the Highlands has never been so roused since the battle of Culloden. Lochiel is anxious that the public should know that he never attacked the Duke of Argyll personally, and he had no idea of associating him with the predatory schemes of the Argyll Council. Colonel Donald Cameron, of Lochiel. chieftain of the Cameron clan, succeeded to the title in 1905. Fie is married to Lady Hermione Emily Graham, second daughter of the fifth Duke of Montrose. The Duke of Argyll is chief of the Campbell clan.
