Hamilton Football
RUGBY COMPETITIONS HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED (From Our Own Correspondent.') HAMILTON, Monday. Fast, exciting- games played in ideal weather were witnessed in the Hamilton Rugby football competitions on Saturday. A fine open exhibition marked the game between Old Boys and Technical Old Boys. The latter’s forwards were a hard-working pack and made some strong rushes. Old Boys’ backs were the deciding factor, proving too good for the opposition, and the Old Boys* team won by IS points to 3. The game was a good one and an improvement can be looked for from the losers. None of the six tries scored by Old Boys was converted.
Huntly went under to the City team by the substantial margin of 35 points to 0, which, singularly enough, was exactly the same score as registered against Huntly by Old Boys last week. The visitors were no match for the strong City team which, however, did not show the cohesion which was a feature of its opening games this season, and although its players flung the ball about in good style, the tries were the outcome more of individual efforts. The heavy City pack held the advantage in the scrums and line-outs. In spite of the mounting score against them Huntly did not lose heart and struggled gamely against their superior opponents.
A margin of five points was a fair indication of the relative merits of the teams Frankton and Ngaruawahia in the match played at the delta township. The game was closely contested and was interesting throughout. Frankton fielded a weak team, being without the services of J. Hooper, Wylie, W. Bayly and Dalbeth, while the team consisted of only 14 players, but it won by 14 points to 9. City and Old Boys stand equal at the head of the points table with three wins and no losses each. They will probably meet next Saturday and a great game should be witnessed. So far this season City has registered 102 points and has had only nine against it, while Old Boys have scored 66 points and have only six standing against them. Technical Old Boys and Frankton have each had one win and Huntly and Ngaruawahia both have a drawn game to their credit. THE LEAGUE MATCH At League, Ngaruawahia defeated Athletic by 19 points to 10 at Hamilton. The game was fairly evenly contested. Team work was deficient, although there were some good solo efforts.
