WHO’S WHO ON THE NIAGARA

BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH PASSENGERS “A beautiful trip—smooth all the way,” was how the passengers described the trip of the Niagara, which arrived to-day, en route to Sydney. * * * Lady Alice Hayes, with her sister, Miss Wilkinson, is returning to Sydney for a holiday, after travelling through Canada. Lady Alice is Aus-tralian-born, but she has lived much of her life in Ireland, where her husband had an estate. Her home was commandeered by the Free State troops and turned into a prison and a court. Both Lady Hayes and her sister are enthusiastic about the Canadian mountains. The big hotel at Banff, which was burned down, has now been rebuilt and was to be opened a fortnight after they left. Lady Marjorie Dalrymple combined a brief holiday visit to Fiji, with the inauguration of the Girl Gflide movements in the Islands. Lady Marjorie hopes that a Fijian troop will be established as a result of her short stay in Suva. For the next two days she will be at Stonehurst. Afterwards Lady Marjorie Dalrymple will return to Hawke’s Bay to resume her duties as acting principal of Woodford House School.

Of all the European countries he visited, Mr N. C. Graham, Sydney tile importer, was most impressed with Germany. He declares that he saw more evidence of prosperity in Germany than in any of the other European countries he stayed in. Mr. Graham is returning to his home in Sydney.

Meet the Rev. Howard Young, who is on his way back to Australia on holiday. He is head of the wealthiest Presbyterian Church in America. It stands in Fifth Avenue, New York, and numbers several millionaires among its congregation. Mr. Young is very fond of America and Americans, and is happy in his work.

$ * * The manufacture of corsets is Miss Quinn’s principal interest these days. As the representative of Berlei’s, the well-known Australian manufacturers. Miss Quinn has been gathering information abroad. She is Melbournebound.

An international footballer is Mr. H. Lamb, who represented New South Wales abroad from 1902-8. He has been investigating football matters in the United States and Canada at the request of the New South Wales Rugby Union.

Mr. IT. Turrell is an Australian mining engineer who has been investigating mining conditions in the United States and Canada.

Mr. J. A. Autherford. chief electrical engineer for the Pacific Cable Board, has been supervising the installation of new machinery at the Bamfield cable station on Victoria Island, Canada. He will return to Sydney after a brief stay in New Zealand.

Mr. D. Worrall is a young Australian journalist who has been visiting America. During his stay in New York he used his natural ability to discover things about prohibition there. “It is impossible to legislate morality,” was his comment. “All that has happened in New York is to drive the bars from the first floor to those above. In one street in which I lived there were 30 “blind-tigers” (sly-groggers). I’m afraid prohibition has made the young people drink more liquor than they did previously.”
