OPOTIKI AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL (From Our Own Correapordent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. At the first meeting of the newlyelected Opotiki Borough Council there was a full attendance of members. The mayor, Mr. G. S. Moody, extended a welcome to the councillors. A motion was passed thanking the retiring councillors, Messrs. Jchnson, Shalfoon, Webb and Hawkins for their services. Councillor Pearson congratulated the mayor on his return, and said it had been a pleasure to work with him. Councillor Carruthers endorsed these remarks. The mayor briefly thanked the speakers, and stated that all he had in the world was in Opotiki, and it was there that he would devote his best energies for the wisest policyCouncillors Burrett, Burke and Stevens thanked the mayor for the welcome. Councillor Fleming was appointed deputy-mayor. Councillor Burrett declined nomination. The mayor’s honorarium was nxeu at £25 per annum. The following committees; were _fs“ pointed, with the mayor ex effleio member to all committes. Finance, Councillors Burrett, Fleming ana Pearson; Works, Councillors Jrpe, Burke, Carruthers, Stevens and Fleming; Sanitation, Councillors Carruthers, Pearson, Stevens and Pipe. The director of town planning advised that he would visit Opotiii on May 31. It was decided to bold a special meeting of the council at - p.m. on that day to meet the director and discuss the position wun him.
