THEFT OF SHIP’S STORES
SEAMAN CONVICTED When the steamer Wingatui arrived from Lyttelton this morning Patrick Byre, aged 33, came ashore, but not to see the sights. He was escorted by Detective McHugh and later, at the Police Court, he was charged with stealing a variety of tinned and ottled foodstuffs, valued in all at 225. The story that he told was that he had taken the stores at Lyttelton for a mate whose wife was sick. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., fined him £2 10s and costs, and allowed him three days in which to find the money.
