THE MORAL ASPECT
LADS ON SERIOUS CHARGES 1 MAGISTRATE’S WARNING “You must pull yourselves together, live proper lives, and never dream of doing anything like this again,” said Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., to four youths who were charged at the Children’s Court to-day with having carnally known girls under 16 years of age. They all pleaded guilty. The magistrate said that one of the lads, who had two previous convictions against him, would have to be convicted again and sent to the Borstal Institute, but the others would be admitted to probation without conviction. “You boys are charged with a very serious offence,” said Mr. Cutten. “In the adult courts of law, which are not courts of morals, but deal only with the legal aspect, the offence is always a very serious one. You come here and we look on the moral question. Our object is not to punish you, but to save you from yourselves.” The three boys without previous convictions were admitted to probation for two years.
