SHANGHAI STAMPS

ORIGINAL ISSUE VALUABLE Shanghai, to which the eyes of the world have been turned, issued its own postage stamps at one time, and the collector who possesses an example of the original issue is a lucky man. The stamps, which made their appearance in 1865, were really more like labels than anything else, and were printed, one at a time, on a hand press. Native printers were responsible for the work and the design was a dragon engraved on wood by a Chinese artist.

This issue was replaced in 1866 by stamps printed in London. They also showed a dragon, but in a later issue a design incorporating the flags of the countries represented in the International Settlement was substituted. The first Shanghai stamps are now rare, but reprints and even forgeries are not uncommon.
