“FRIGHTFULLY BAD”
POOR NAVAL GUNNERY WARSHIPS ENGAGE FORT HARMLESS CHINESE FIGHT By Cable.—Bress Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.30 a.m. SHANGHAI, Wed. The Northern warship, Haiehi, accompanied by another cruiser and an armed merchantman, hove to three miles from Woosung. The Haiehi and the Woosung forts then exchanged 200 shells. The Haiehi was not hit, but the forts were slightly damaged. The Northern ships then proceeded to sea. The British naval authorities report that the engagement lasted one hour. The Southern . arships anchored in Shanghai harbour are preparing to ‘depart for Woosung. The shooting was described as “frightfully bad” on both sides. This is responsible for the merchant shipping being held up as it was afraid to venture within miles. —A. and N.Z.
