UNUSUAL APPEAL BY PRISONER

MAN IN MOUNT EDEN ASKS JUDGE TO REDUCE SENTENCE

JN applying to his Honour Mr. Justice Herdman at the Supreme Court this morning for a remission of a sentence he is now serving at Mount Eden, John Peris, a quarter-caste Australian

aboriginal, adopted an unusual method of procedure.

Although a method he was entitled to adopt, it is not often that such application is made.

In making his application prisoner stated he was now serving a sentence of six months’ hard labour to be followed by 18 months’ reformative treatment. He said he preferred to make his application to the court rather than go to the Prisons Board, and if given a chance he would leave the country immediately. Addressing prisoner, his Honour said that since his arrival in 1925 he had been very busy, judging from his very extensive list. On four occasions he had been convicted of obscene language and altogether he had 34 convictions recorded against him. His Honour stated that he could not see his way clear to interfere. Prisoner would have to apply to the board.
