ZIMBALIST

CONCERT TO-NIGHT Box office indications are that a large gathering of music-lovers will assemble in the Town Hall this evening to welcome the world-famous violinist, who will make his debut before an Australasian audience. In view of the .enthusiasm with which Zimbalist’s predecessors, Kubelik. Elman, Heifetz and Kreisler, were received by local audiences, there should be no doubt as to the warmth of the reception awaiting our distinguished visitor. The programme selected for this evening’s recital-' is one that should commend itself to all lovers of serious music. Mr. Zimbalist has earned in Europe and America a great reputation as an interpreter of the violin classics, and it is fitting that Aucklanders should gain their first impression of him in a work of the severe type of the celebrated Praeludium and Allegro of Pugnani. This will be followed by the Concerto in G minor of Hubay, a composition which has not hitherto been played in New Zealand, but which has been exten sively popularised by Mr. Zimbalist in the United States and most of the European countries. Hubay was a noted violin virtuoso and his writings may be expected to exploit the full technical resource of the instrument The G minor Concerto is said to be an extraordinarily brilliant work, with considerable melodic charm. Particular interest will be evinced in Mr. Zimbalist’s own Fantasia on Rimsky-Kor-sakoff’s opera, “Le Coq d’Or.” Othei numbers will include Albert Spalding’s arrangement of one of Chopin s waltzes, a Serenata by d’Ambrosio, Glinko’s ‘Persian Song,” arranged by Mr. Zimbalist, and the popular little pyrotechnic “Ronde des Lutins.” Box plans for the three recitals (to-night, to-morrow Saturday) are at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd. Day sale tickets are on sale at His Majesty’s Theatre confectionery.
