“MARE NOSTRUM”
AT MAJESTIC ON FRIDAY The latest files of Australia record the phenomenal success of MetroGold wyn-Mayer’s great epic, “Mare Nostrum,” at Sydney, at the Piccadilly Theatre, and at Adelaide at the York Theatre, where Rex Ingram’s triumphant production opened simultaneously on March 19. At Adelaide it is stated “the ticket boxes were besieged by surging crowds with such energy that the excited clamourqrs for admission completely smashed the box office front. The ‘house full’ sign was displayed as early as six o’clock.” At Sydney similar scenes took place, and “a new record in advance bookings was established.” The Press is loud in its praise of the picture. Beautiful Alice Terry is described as “excelling all her previous successes in the part of Freya Thalberg, a German spy, a siren of the war days in magnificent frocks,” and Antonio Moreno, her handsome, dashing lover, is credited with achieving “the outstanding performance of his “career.” Ibanez’ splendid romantic story, which is replete with thrills and fairly bristles with adventurous episodes, was a great success when übiished as a novel, possessing, as it does, an unusually strong appeal, especially to the ladies. The picture is said to “follow along the lines of the book with absolute faithfulness and to intensify that appeal. The special .orchestral score which accompanies “Mare Nostrum” on its world’s tour will be interprated by the orchestra under the direction of Mr. F. Mumford. Box plans are at the theatre, and early application for seats is strongly advised by the management.
